HISTORY & TRADITIONS Northampton has a rich history in cement and canal transportation leading to its boom in population and industry by the end of the 19th century. In 1829, it was ordered that construction would begin on the canal that would later run coal and other goods Northbound from Philadelphia and would run with the Lehigh River. In 1895, Atlas Portland Cement opened followed soon by Lawrence Portland Cement Company quickly followed by 3 other cement companies, bringing a boom to the small area by the 1900 census allowing for the creation of Borough of Alliance in 1902 to be renamed Northampton in 1909.
